South Texas' Top Master Racewalkers Win Again!

                                       (January 8, 2006)

Austin's Alberto Medina continues his winning ways and expanding his impressive racewalking resume.  Not only has he finished an outstanding second to two-time Olympian Tim Seaman in recent head-to-head 5K competition, duke'd it out with South Texas' best up-and-coming youth and past Olympian seniors, and represented the US in international masters competition, now he has been victorious in Racewalking's premier ultra-distance event - the 50K.

At the Gulf Association's annual John Evans 50K in Bear Creek Park, Houston, Alberto walked an impressive 5:16:23 for the 31-mile event - the longest distance in the Olympic card AND the fastest time this year.  Coming in second was Venezuela's Juan Yanes with a 5:22:41 clocking, and rounding out the top 3 spots was the Gulf Champion, Lojza Vosta in 6:56:26.

In the 5K race, Victoria's Susan Brooke, originally from Canada and a past national team member,  beat all comers with a solid 28:25.  Finishing a distant second was Malaysia's Dr K.C. Goh in 37:09, followed closely by the Gulf's Juanita Rogillio in a strong 38:39.

Other South Texas members participating:  Officials -- George West's Lynn and Janis Bluhm, and San Antonio's Diana and Bert Pickell (Chief Judge).
